Ontario dominates list of top research hospitals in Canada

A 2024 report on the best research hospitals in the country has been released, and Ontario is dominating the list. 

Research Infosource Inc. (a Canadian data firm) has released an annual list of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals.

According to their research, 19 Ontario hospitals have been recognized for their crucial roles in promoting innovation in national health care incentives. 

From 2023 to 2024, research hospitals in Ontario garnered over $2-billion in investment.

As a result, 27,000 skilled researchers, state-of-the-art research facilities, equipment and technologies were implemented throughout Ontario. 

“Ontario hospitals are already driving change by leveraging technology and innovation to help meet future health care needs,” said Anthony Dale, President and CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) in an official statement. “Growing investments in hospital-based research allow hospitals to strategically address Canada’s national health priorities.”

According to Research Infosource Inc.’s data, the 19 Ontario hospitals specializing in research progress include: 

  • University Health Network
  • Hospital for Sick Children
  • The Ottawa Hospital
  •  London Health Sciences Centre/St. Joseph’s Health Care London
  •  Hamilton Health Sciences
  • Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre\\
  • Unity Health Toronto
  • Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
  • Sinai Health
  • St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton
  • Kingston Health Sciences Centre
  • Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario
  • Baycrest Centre
  • Women’s College Hospital
  • Bruyère Health
  • The Royal
  • Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital
  • Hôpital Montfort
  • Trillium Health Partners

According to the report, research conducted within hospitals is crucial to medical breakthroughs, and Ontario hospitals on the list have already contributed to advancements in areas such as kidney, respiratory and cardiovascular disease.

“The untapped potential of Canada’s health research ecosystem presents an incredible opportunity to advance our health care system to meet the demands of Canada’s growing and ageing population,” said Dale.
