One person has died and three people are injured in a possibly suspicious house fire overnight in Mississauga.

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services responded to the fire at a two-storey townhouse on Bromsgrove Road near Winston Churchill Boulevard just after 3 a.m. this morning (March 12), Peel Regional Police said in a post on X.

Police and Mississauga Fire confirmed one person died in the blaze.

“On behalf of Mississauga Fire it is with profound sadness to advise we have responded to a fatal house fire this morning,” Mississauga Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi said in a post on X.

Rizzi told reporters three other people were taken to hospital — one person was in critical condition.

The home was consumed with heavy flames when crews arrived.

Two people escaped and were on the front lawn with significant injuries when crews arrived.

“Two people were able to self-evacuate prior to fire’s arrival & have been transported by Peel Paramedics to hospital, one with significant burn injuries,” Rizzi said.

The two other people were still in the home and fire crews were able to rescue them.

“Two people were rescued from the home by firefighters with vital signs absent. Patients were transported to the hospital. The condition of the patients is unknown,” said Rizzi.

One of the injured later died in hospital.

Crews also rescued a dog and cat from the home but the dog didn’t survive.

Rizzi told reporters there were multiple points of origin for the fire and it is therefore believed to be suspicious. Peel Regional Police will be investigating. The Ontario Fire Marshal is also expected to attend later today.

As of 6:30 a.m., Bromsgrove Road remained closed from Cramer Street to Winston Churchill Boulevard, police said.

Police asked drivers to use alternate routes.

Update: Sadly, a second person has died in this fire. An update can be found here.
