Police cleared in man’s death following fall from bridge in Brampton: SIU

Ontario’s law enforcement watchdog agency says there are no grounds for criminal charges against police after a man fell to his death from a Brampton bridge.
The fatal incident happened on Aug. 13 after officers with Peel Regional Police witnessed a man standing in the westbound lane on the Highway 401 overpass at Steeles Avenue, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says.
Police had also received multiple 911 calls about someone “on the bridge railing,” the SIU says. When officers approached the man he fell onto the highway below and was later pronounced dead, investigators say.
All southbound lanes on Highway 410 were closed at Steeles Avenue following the incident.
Few details were available from police at the time, but the victim was believed to be a woman. The victim has not been identified but police say the deceased was a 26-year-old male.
The SIU found that the man had been on the bridge railing before the officers’ arrival and that officers had not “transgressed the limits of care” in their interaction with the victim.
In his decision, SIU Director Joseph Martino said “there is no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case.”
