Snow storm Mississauga

Mississauga officials are offering a few words of winter advice to newcomers to the city in anticipation of what’s expected to be an especially cold and snowy season.

The advice can prove particularly helpful to people new to Canada’s seventh-largest city who have previously lived in places with little or no snow, City of Mississauga officials said in a news release today (Nov. 14).

In brief, they’re urging newcomers to visit the City’s website with a specific eye towards what winter services are offered and how Mississauga’s huge network of roads gets cleared of the white, slushy stuff after significant snowfalls.

One key service provided by the City is the Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program, available to people aged 65 and older or those with disabilities. The program provides clearing of windrows, the piles of snow that collect at the bottom of driveways after snow plows clear the road.

Additionally, officials say, newcomers should check out a list of indoor activities provided by the City that can make the winter months more bearable.

And the 311 Mississauga information phone number is a quick way to have any questions answered.

“Snow falls in Mississauga from November to April, with most of it landing in January and February. Last January and February, we got a monthly average of almost 50 centimetres,” City officials said in their news release.

Last January also saw a record-setting snowfall as a storm for the ages blasted Mississauga and other parts of the GTA over three days.

City officials also remind newcomers that if they find themselves in an emergency situation that requires immediate police, fire or medical attention that they’re to call 911.

“It is important to remain calm and tell the 911 operator what is happening, where it is happening and who you are,” officials say. “Operators can connect with translation services to find someone who speaks your language, if needed.”

City officials said in late October that they’ve lined up 180 snow plows and salt trucks, 46 plow loaders and 275 sidewalk/bus pad-clearing machines as they prepare for what they believe will be an especially cold and snowy winter.

“The Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a cold and snowy 2022-2023 winter season. You might believe it’s too early to start thinking about the snow, but just like putting snow tires on your car, planning before the snow falls is smart,” officials said.
