Last week’s mild temperatures will feel like a distant memory as colder weather sweeps across southern Ontario this week.

Rain and snow are set to create a slushy mix, just in time for those heading outdoors with family and friends to ring in 2025.

As of today (Dec. 29), Ontario residents will start the day under mainly cloudy skies with foggy patches that will dissipate by morning. Rain is expected to move in, bringing an accumulation of 15 to 25 mm across the area.

Winds will strengthen to 20 km/h as the day progresses, with daytime highs reaching 12 C. Sunset is set for 4:46 p.m.

Environment Canada says cloudy skies will persist into the evening as heavy rainfall continues, raising the risk of localized flooding on roads and low-lying areas. Rainfall is expected to add up to 5 mm or more before tapering off around midnight.

Winds will also intensify, reaching speeds of 30 to 60 km/h., while overnight temperatures will dip slightly but remain above freezing, settling at 3 C.

Monday starts cloudy with a chance of early morning flurries or rain showers before rain settles in by mid-morning. Showers will taper off by afternoon, leaving a mild high of 5 C.

By evening, the skies turn partly cloudy near midnight as winds calm. Temperatures will dip to zero, setting the stage for a cooler start to New Year’s Eve.

Heading into the final day of the year, Tuesday is anticipated to be a mix of sun and clouds with a 30 per cent chance of light rain showers or flurries during the day. Temperatures will rise to 4 C, making for relatively mild conditions for December.

As evening festivities kick off, periods of rain or snow are predicted. The temperature will hover around 1 C. Those celebrating outdoors might want to bundle up and prepare for wet or slushy conditions.

The new year begins with wintry weather as cloudy skies bring a 60 per cent chance of snow on Wednesday. Daytime highs will reach just 1 C, offering a frosty backdrop for any New Year’s Day plans. Overnight, temperatures will dip to -2 C, with a 40 per cent chance of flurries.

Thursday is set to bring a mix of sun and cloud with a 40 per cent chance of flurries and a high of 0 C. Clouds will roll in by evening, as temperatures slip to -5 C.

Heading into the weekend, colder air will settle in. Friday and Saturday will see highs of -2 C and -5 C, with occasional flurries and overnight lows slipping as low as -7 C—making it the coldest night compared to the week!
