There’s a new sports stadium dedicated to the full-contact sport of kabaddi coming to Brampton.

Kabaddi is popular in India and many South Asian countries and the city is building on the popularity of cricket with Brampton’s first permanent kabaddi venue.

The game is played between two teams of seven players and resembles a full-contact game of tag, with players taking turns as the “raider” trying to touch members of the opposing team without being tackled.

The city set out to bring the first dedicated kabaddi stadium in its parks master plan and new details about Brampton’s first dedicated kabaddi venue will be shared by the city on Saturday.

“Recognizing this traditional sport holds significant cultural importance within the community, this event will highlight the City’s commitment to supporting and promoting it,” the city says.

Kabaddi is an ancient sport dating back to between 500 and 1500 BCE, according to some reports. It’s the national pastime in Bangladesh and has grown since the 1920s to become one of the most popular sports in India.

International sports are some of the most popular in Brampton leading the city to set a goal of becoming the cricket capital of Canada and investing millions into cricket infrastructure.

The city is also hosting the Global T20 Canada Cricket Tournament which kicked off this week.
