The new Mississauga hospital, slated to be the largest in Canada, is up for an international architecture award.
The 24-storey Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital won’t start construction until at least 2025 but it has already garnered international attention.
The Trillium Health Partners’ historical hospital redevelopment at The Queensway and Hurontario Street, entered the development phase earlier this year.
Well ahead of its completion, the prestigious World Architecture Festival has shortlisted the design of the hospital, from architectural firm Stantec, in the Future Projects – Healthcare category.
The World Architecture Festival, now in its 16th year, celebrates architectural excellence from across the globe. Awards include “some of the most innovative and ground-breaking designs in the world,” the festival says on its website.
The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital “is redefining a new urban centre focused on health,” the award entry description reads.
The 280,000 square metre, 985-bed acute hospital will nearly triple the size of the current hospital, the description continues.
The description notes the design creates a strong streetscape connection at the busy Queensway and Hurontario Street intersection.
The lower podium (foot or base of the building) provides urban connectivity along with retail space, a multicultural marketplace, a multi-functional auditorium for public programs, and a welcoming civic plaza.
Also, there is a dedicated education space supporting learning for healthcare providers and a new venue for public outreach.
Additionally, the hospital will be accessible to the new Hazel McCallion light rail transit system.
“An increased street presence seamlessly integrates the new hospital into the community’s urban fabric,” the description notes.
The four landscaped courtyards for patients and staff is noted along with the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The light and access to the outdoors “contribute significantly to a patient’s healing process.”
The project’s sustainable development measures including low energy performance, and low operational and embodied carbon are also noted.

The World Architecture Festival 2023 will be at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.
