The largest-ever financial donation to a hospital in Canadian history was made this week and is expected to help make the new Mississauga Hospital the most advanced healthcare facility in the country.

Trillium Health Partners (THP), which oversees Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals in this city in addition to Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke, officially received the $105 million gift from developer/philanthropist Peter Gilgan on Tuesday (Feb. 15).

THP officials say the record-setting donation from The Peter Gilgan Foundation will “help build the largest and most advanced hospital in Canada and re-define the future of healthcare.”

The hospital will open to the public some years down the road as the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital.

THP Foundation president and CEO Caroline Riseboro noted the huge donation comes some two months after Ontario Premier Doug Ford was at the Mississauga Hospital site to confirm the provincial government’s commitment to building the new hospital and helping expand the Queensway site.

However, she added, provincial dollars alone don’t build the best healthcare facilities in the country.

That’s where the community, and philanthropy, enter the picture. Riseboro described the latest donation as “an extraordinary, transformational gift.”

She noted it’s generous donors who help fund the high-tech equipment, game-changing research and modern facilities “that help deliver high-quality and accessible care so everyone can get the healthcare they need when they need it.”

“To build the largest hospital in Canada, we could not do it alone,” Riseboro continued.

“We want to thank Peter Gilgan and The Peter Gilgan Foundation for this historic donation that will transform healthcare for everyone living in the west GTA and help set a new standard of care for our country. Peter Gilgan is the most generous benefactor to healthcare in Canadian history, and we could not be prouder that he and his family have chosen Trillium Health Partners as the recipient of this extraordinary donation. Peter’s unparalleled generosity embodies the power of philanthropy to help transform healthcare and will inspire others to step up so THP can realize its bold vision of a new kind of healthcare for a healthier community.”

Gilgan, founder of Mattamy Homes, said that as Mississauga has grown and diversified, so have the demands on the hospital.

“The additional struggles presented by the pandemic have underscored the critical need for modern healthcare facilities, and challenged our healthcare workers like never before,” said Gilgan, chair and CEO of Mattamy Asset Management. “THP will combine bold new infrastructure with a proactive approach to community health; it’s the complete solution we urgently need. And because I started my business in this region many years ago, this gift is a way of giving back to the community and to recognize our amazing healthcare workers for their commitment. I’m thrilled to be able to support THP in its much-needed mission to transform healthcare.”

Riseboro noted that THP has been under tremendous pressure for many years to meet the healthcare needs of a “rapidly growing and changing community, with both Mississauga Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital regularly over 100 per cent capacity.”

And staff at Mississauga Hospital, which was built in 1958, have been trying to meet the need using aging infrastructure.

Moving forward, she added, “no hospital will face more demand over the next 20 years in Ontario” than THP.

“The need to renew our infrastructure for the 2.2 million people we serve and who live in the west GTA has never been more urgent and apparent.”
