New Mississauga fire station opens this weekend in busy part of city

One of several new fire stations planned for Mississauga in the next dozen years or so is officially opening this Sunday (May 29).

Mississauga Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi, Mayor Bonnie Crombie and other City of Mississauga officials and staff will be on hand starting at noon to officially unveil Fire Station 120.

The new station, located at 125 Eglinton Ave. W. beside the new Fairwinds Park, is Mississauga’s 22nd fire station, and first to be built since 2003. Five more will be added by 2033 to increase the number to 27.

In addition to new fire stations, the City last year approved a $66-million, 10-year plan to significantly renovate and upgrade 17 fire stations across the city.

Some of the stations hadn’t been upgraded in more than 30 years.

Residents and others are invited to Sunday’s ceremonial opening of Fire Station 120, in addition to the official opening of Fairwinds Park that follows.

Following opening remarks that start at noon, there will be a tour of the fire station and fire trucks from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Those who attend are asked to park in the Fairwinds Park lot or along Fairwind Dr.

The official opening of Fairwinds Park begins at 2 p.m. After remarks from City officials, a pirate-themed community event is planned from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

Activities include a live pirate show, costume contest, treats and a War of 1812 reenactment.

Fairwinds Park, which includes a nautical-themed play area and is situated in the midst of the 36-acre Pinnacle Uptown residential/commercial development at Hurontario Rd. and Eglinton Ave., has been described by area City councillor Carolyn Parrish as a “one-of-a-kind” park and playground.
