A new, low-fare airline celebrated its first flight out of Pearson Airport in Mississauga with a special drone show.

Arajet, a low-fare airline based in the Dominican Republic, started its route from Pearson to Santo Domingo yesterday (Oct. 24).

The new Toronto – Santo Domingo route will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Return airfares are under $400 U.S.

In addition to the direct flight to Santo Domingo, Arajet also offers connections to Central and South America.

“We are thrilled to welcome Arajet Airlines as our newest carrier of the Toronto Pearson family,” the Greater Toronto Airport Authority said in a press release.

Arajet started operations in September 2022 from its base at Las Americas Airport in Santo Domingo.

The low-fare airline started as a dream to offer less expensive options for Dominican residents, said Víctor Pacheco Méndez, Arajet CEO and founder, at the inaugural Toronto flight celebration at Hotel X in Toronto yesterday (Oct. 24).

With flights costing around $800 to $1,000 previously, Méndez said most Dominican residents could not afford to travel.

He looked to other small countries such as Iceland that had low-fare airlines and he thought he could do the same in the Dominican Republic.

The first year has proven successful with $150 million in revenue and about a half a million passengers.

“Honestly, it became bigger than I ever thought it would be,” he said.

The celebration ended with a special Illumin Drone Show featuring 340 drones lighting up the Toronto sky.
