Dozens of street signs that have helped Mississauga students get to and from school safely for more than a decade may be getting a new look.

City of Mississauga officials in charge of the School Walking Routes Program say signs installed in neighbourhoods surrounding some 40 elementary schools since the program was launched in 2008 may be due for an update.

They’re asking residents and the larger school community for feedback, via an online survey, on how the signage might be improved.

“Mississauga students, parents and those who travel around school zones are encouraged to take the quick survey,” Mississauga officials said in a news release today (Nov. 1). “Share your thoughts on the signs, including the impact the signs have on driver behaviour, and the possibility of adding information to the signs such as wayfinding, distance and travel times.

“As the City explores the possibility of updating its School Walking Routes signs, feedback from the survey will help inform decisions.”

The purpose of the program is to encourage active travel to school, such as walking or biking, and improve safety in school zones and nearby neighbourhoods, the City adds.

Families can go online to access custom maps for their school to plan a safe and active route to and from school.

The School Walking Routes Program is one component of Mississauga’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which seeks to eventually eliminate all vehicle collisions that result in serious injuries and deaths.
