A new ice skating trail opens this weekend in Mississauga.
The 210-metre-long loop in Port Credit Memorial Park has been anticipated for several months.
Announced in August 2022, initially, the path was expected to open sometime in December 2023. It was delayed but now it will open in a few days.
The Port Credit Memorial Park Skating Trail will open on Friday, Jan. 19 at 4:30 p.m., Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko said in a post on X.
This will be a soft opening but skaters can enjoy a special, inaugural skate and hot chocolate, Dasko said.
The official grand opening will be a bigger celebration on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
This free event will feature figure skating club performances, a ribbon cutting, fire and ice demonstrations, ice sculptures, interactive children’s activities, a DJ playing favourite tunes, food vendors, skate rentals and contests, Dasko said.
The new, 3.5 metre-wide path will double as a walking path in the warmer months. In winter, a glycol cooling system will keep the ice ready for skating.
Port Credit Memorial Park is located along the Credit River and Lake Ontario and is a popular spot for cultural events, basketball and other activities.
I am pleased to announce the opening of an initiative that is near & dear to my heart.
