Another community youth hub similar to one that’s proven popular with residents since opening late last year in Malton could be on the way for the east end of Mississauga.

Mayor Carolyn Parrish wrote in a post to social media last Thursday “there are serious plans afoot to build a second youth hub like the one in Malton” at Glenforest Secondary School, which is located at Fieldgate Drive and Burnhamthorpe Road East.

The mayor’s post to X (formerly Twitter) referenced the demolition of the high school’s indoor swimming pool, a city/school shared facility that’s no longer needed now that a new aquatics centre is open to the public at the renovated Burnhamthorpe Community Centre.

“Demolition of Glenforest Secondary School swimming pool enclosure begins,” Parrish wrote in her Aug. 8 post. “For some, this is sad news. Others should be excited. There are serious plans afoot to build a second youth hub like the one in Malton, which has attracted 6,000 to 7,000 visits a month to its exciting youth-designed amenities.”

One resident of a number who commented on the mayor’s post supported the idea of a youth-oriented facility.

“If this is anything close to the Malton hub, then (the) community should be elated; that place is extraordinary,” the person wrote.

The $12.6-million Malton Youth Hub Jonathan Davis Centre officially opened last December, though people began using the new facility two months earlier. It has been described by City of Mississauga officials and members of the community as an “incredible youth space” and “a hopping place” since opening its doors.

The long-awaited renovated facility, which is attached to Lincoln Alexander Secondary School on Morning Star Drive, was converted from what was previously a school swimming pool into a vast, multi-use centre for young people, officials said earlier.
