Once just an exciting proposal on paper (as all newly conceived developments are), Mississauga’s ambitious Brightwater community is coming together and big retailers are already opening in a community set to feature 3,000 new homes.
Last week, Farm Boy, a growing grocery brand that’s been popping up in major Ontario cities, officially opened its brand new Port Credit location at 175 Lakeshore Rd. W. While Farm Boy will be the anchor tenant of the 72-acre development that’s taking shape along Mississauga’s waterfront, other retailers have also announced plans to call the emerging community home.
Today, Port Credit West Village Partners—the development team behind Brightwater—told residents that COBS Bread Bakery, Pop On Nails, D Spot Dessert Cafe, and the LCBO are slated to open soon.
The site is also home to a new Rexall, Bone & Biscuit, dental office and Bank of Montreal location.
The newest Farm Boy is Mississauga’s first location.
“We’re delighted to bring such a beloved grocery brand to our residents and the Port Credit community,” says Christina Giannone, vice president, planning and development, at Port Credit West Village Partners.
“Brightwater is delivering on its promise of being a walkable community, with a thoughtfully curated retail mix, featuring daily essentials, cafés, restaurants and more.”
COBS, known for its fresh bread and baked goods, currently operates five locations in the city, with shops located in Erin Mills, Meadowvale, and the Eglinton and Highway 10 area.
D Spot also operates several locations in the city and the LCBO–which will reopen all of its locations following a brief strike this week–boasts multiple Mississauga shops.
Construction of the Brightwater community, which, when completed at Mississauga and Lakeshore Rds. in Port Credit, will also feature 300,000 sq. ft. of commercial, restaurant, retail, and office space and 18 acres of green space, began in October 2021.
As part of the 3,000 new homes, the development will offer 150 affordable housing units. According to city officials, a new elementary school may also be part of the plan.
Officials say included in the 18 acres of greenspace are plans for a 13-acre waterfront park with a connection to Ben Machree Parkette to the west and J.C. Saddington Park to the east.
A trail system and pedestrian-friendly mews and promenades will also potentially be part of the large greenspace.
The city notes that the site’s industrial history includes brick manufacturing in the late 1800s and an oil refinery from 1932 to 1987.
As far as housing goes, PCWVP says Bridge House is the newest phase at Brightwater and includes three towers with a shared amenity deck featuring Port Credit’s first rooftop swim spa. The new development also includes studio, one- and two-bedroom units.
