mother dies family struck by car toronto

A 39-year-old mother has died in hospital after she and her family were hit by a car in Toronto, police say.

Toronto police said that on Oct. 2 at around 6:10 p.m., officers responded to the Islington and Orrell avenues area, which is north of Dundas Street West.

A 77-year-old woman was driving a red 2017 Toyota Corolla west on Finchley Road, approaching Islinton Avenue, police said.

A family of five — a 45-year-old man, 39-year-old woman, and their three young children — were reportedly crossing Islington from the southwest side of the intersection to the southeast side of the road.

“The driver of the vehicle made a left turn from Finchley Road to southbound Islington Avenue and struck the pedestrians in the crosswalk,” police said.

The driver stayed at the scene.

The family were all taken to hospital with injuries, police said, including the children: two girls aged four and one, as well as a one-month-old baby boy.

The mother suffered life-threatening injuries and died in hospital on Thursday.

Police said an investigation is ongoing and asked that anyone with video footage of the area or incident come forward.
