A 19-year-old woman has been charged with murder following the death of her baby who was pulled from a house fire in Toronto last week, police say.

Toronto police said that on Oct. 25 at 1:06 a.m., officers responded to a fire at a home on Trethewey Drive, north of Yore Road, which is north of Eglinton Avenue West.

A 19-year-old woman and her four-month-old girl were pulled from the home and the baby was rushed to hospital without any vital signs, police said.

The girl was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The woman was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It’s not clear if the baby died directly as a result of the fire, or possibly from some other cause.

“The facts of the case will be presented in court, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family.”

Police said that as a result of the investigation, the woman has been charged.

Toronto resident Kathrynn Quita Batugal has been charged with second-degree murder and arson/fire with disregard for human life.
