Canada’s west coast, the Big Apple and the largest city in the U.K. are three of the most popular destinations for the millions of travellers expected to leave town from Pearson Airport in Mississauga this summer.

Pearson officials said via social media on Thursday they’re anticipating some 160,000 people daily to move through Canada’s biggest airport on its busiest days during July and August in what’s shaping up to be an even busier summer for air travel than those same two months in 2023.

The summer travel season is the busiest, by far, at Pearson and other airports across the country. Officials at Pearson said about 1,100 daily flights are expected to take off from and arrive at the airport this summer.

Many of those flights, airport officials said in a separate post to social media, will be headed for Vancouver. In fact, they estimate about 320,000 travellers will catch flights to the west coast city from Pearson in July and August, making it the single-most popular destination — domestic and international — out of Canada’s busiest airport.

Meanwhile, some 204,000 people are expected to fly to Montreal and another 185,000 to Edmonton (290,000 total will take to the skies for all of Alberta).

As for travel to the U.S., Pearson officials said 123,000 travellers will punch tickets for LaGuardia Airport in New York City this summer. The number of people heading to the Big Apple is even greater when the area’s other two main airports — JFK International and Newark (New Jersey) — are included in the mix.

New York City is the most popular U.S. destination for travellers planning to fly out of Pearson Airport this summer.

Chicago is also a popular destination this summer, with about 102,000 people expected to catch flights from Pearson to the Windy City.

Across the ocean, London leads the list with an anticipated 123,000 travellers heading to the U.K. capital from Pearson in the next couple of months.

“Our top international destinations (beyond the U.S.) this summer are all in Europe,” Pearson officials said in a post to X (formerly Twitter), noting Paris, with 86,000 people packing their bags and heading there via Pearson, finds itself in second place behind London.

The other most popular destinations for travellers taking off from Pearson this summer are (figures are estimates):

  • Halifax — 177,000
  • Los Angeles — 95,000
  • Rome — 84,000
  • Frankfurt — 78,000
  • Atlanta — 70,500
  • Lisbon — 70,000
  • Orlando — 67,500
  • Cancun — 67,000
  • Punta Cana — 49,000

Adding to the busy summer 2024 travel season at Pearson is its standing as “the most connected airport in North America in terms of international destinations,” airport officials said this week.

“And we continue to add new routes to meet our passengers’ expectations. In 2023, we flew 45 million passengers to 195 destinations across Canada and the globe.”
