Ongoing construction and watermain repairs will lead to weeks of road closures and detours in downtown Brampton starting this week.

Peel Public Works says crews will be closing the southbound lanes of Main Street North to all through traffic from Nelson Street West and Theatre Lane to Queen Street as part of the replacement of ageing watermain and sanitary sewers in the city’s downtown.

The closures will start on Wednesday (Oct. 25) and are expected to last at least three weeks with detours on Queen Street, Theatre Lane and George Street.

Customers will be able to visit businesses during construction as pedestrian access will still be maintained, although no through traffic will be allowed and there will be no on-street parking.

Peel Public Works says crews will need to dig a temporary trench on Main Street North from Queen Street to Nelson Street West. Businesses can use Diplock Lane and Garden Square for deliveries during the closures and short-term loading zones will also be available on Queen Street East and Queen Street West.

With active construction ongoing, the Region is urging drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down and consider other routes if possible.
