Ajax Plaza, one of the town’s major shopping destinations, is set to receive new security cameras and other measures like a new bicycle police patrol.

The town announced the project, which was assisted by provincial funding, Durham Police, and Ajax’s own Partnership Fund, last week.

The Ajax Partnership Fund has granted several businesses in the plaza $500 each to improve their security equipment. The grand total of the funding is $10,000. Any left unspent will go toward vulnerable communities.

Next, Durham Police recently received $400,000 for new security cameras across the region, half of which came from Ontario. Durham Region received $200,000 the maximum the province would match. The year before, Ontario granted $170,000 to Durham for new CCTV cameras., which was also match locally.

Of this latest funding, Ajax will get $47,000. They’ll use some of this funding to install multiple 360-degree cameras throughout the plaza. The installation is set to finish in October.

Finally, Durham Police has pledged a bicycle cop patrol through the downtown core, including the plaza, from May to September from now on.
