The Montreal Canadiens have signed Bramptonian and veteran centre Sean Monahan to a one-year contract extension worth $1.985 million US dollars.

The club announced on Tuesday that the 28-year-old from Brampton had signed the deal, meaning Monahan won’t become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Monahan had six goals and 17 points in 25 games with the Canadiens in 2022-23 before suffering a lower-body injury in early December that ended his season.

The sixth overall pick at the 2013 draft, Monahan has 218 goals and 479 points in 681 games with the Canadiens and the Calgary Flames.

Montreal acquired him from Calgary along with a conditional first-round pick for future considerations last summer when the Flames were clearing salary cap space to sign Nazem Kadri.

The rebuilding Canadiens, who own the No. 5 pick at next week’s NHL draft, missed the playoffs last season for the second straight spring.

Monahan will lace up alongside other NHL stars in Brampton this August to raise funds for healthcare projects in the city.

Hockey Night in Brampton will see Monahan, Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mark Giordano and former Chicago Blackhawk Jeremy Roenick play a charity game in support of William Osler Health System’s youth mental health services as well as the new Brampton hospital.

Tickets are available now, and donations can also be made directly to William Osler Health Foundation.

Monahan was born in Brampton and attended St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School, and the City paid tribute to his Brampton roots with the renaming of a park in his honour last summer.
