When it comes to stories that generate a great deal of reader interest, Pearson Airport in Mississauga is in a category by itself.

As we look back at insauga.com’s most-read stories of 2021 in Mississauga, many of the top items are related to the airport.

So, in addition to a yet-to-come general list of the five most highly viewed Mississauga stories of the year, we decided to also present a list of the top five 2021 stories that had to do specifically with Pearson.

Here are our five most-read Pearson Airport stories of 2021:

5) Huge jet manufacturing plant to create 3,000 jobs at Pearson Airport in Mississauga

Montreal-based Bombardier, one of the world’s top makers of private business jets, is building a nearly $500-million state-of-the-art jet-building plant at Pearson Airport.

Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bombardier announced this year that it remains on schedule to open its Global Manufacturing Centre in Mississauga in 2023.

The one million-sq.-ft. plant is expected to be a significant addition to the airport business community.

4) Huge unmarked plane lands at Pearson Airport in Mississauga, likely carrying Dubai dignitaries

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? And if you’re an aviation geek, or simply like to watch planes take off and land, this story especially grabbed your interest.

Not only was this aircraft that showed up on the tarmac at Pearson one of the largest you’ll see, but it had no markings at all on its exterior.

Kind of like an Area 51 of the sky, perhaps. Okay, that’s pushing it. Still, this September landing at Pearson garnered a great deal of reader interest–especially given there was no official word on what the jet was doing here.

Anyone think Agents Scully and Mulder might have been aboard? It did kind of have an X-Files feel to it.

But the considerably more likely explanation is that it was carrying dignitaries from Dubai. Aviation enthusiasts identified the jet as being a Dubai Royal Air Wing Boeing 747.

3) New rules in effect for travellers flying out of Pearson Airport in Mississauga

Detailing a major change to air travel rules during the COVID-19 pandemic, this story grabbed a great deal of reader interest.

For the first time, travellers flying out of Pearson and other airports across Canada were told they had to show they were fully vaccinated against the virus or produce a negative test before they’d be allowed to board their flights.

Four weeks after the unveiling of that regulation, the grace period for showing negative tests expired and outgoing travellers had to show proof of full vaccination or they wouldn’t be allowed in the air.

2) World’s largest passenger plane makes emergency landing at Mississauga’s Pearson Airport

When an Emirates Airbus A380 unexpectedly landed at Pearson just around dinner time one September evening, people wanted to know why.

As it turned out, there was a medical emergency on board the Los Angeles-to-Dubai flight, forcing it to land at Pearson.

The double-decker jet is equipped to carry more than 800 passengers, but generally houses in the neighbourhood of 500-plus–still a pretty big machine. In fact, it’s the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

1) International travellers are walking out of Mississauga’s Pearson Airport and ignoring quarantine rules

The COVID-19 pandemic has gripped Mississauga, Canada and the world for nearly two years now, and every time new rules and restrictions have been put in place, it’s taken time for people to adjust.

In this particular case, many travellers arriving at Pearson from all over the world chose to bypass new government virus testing and hotel quarantine rules by simply walking out of the airport or by paying a fine.

Peel Regional Police told insauga.com at the time that they weren’t detaining or arresting any of the rule-breaking travellers.
