Mississauga’s Bianca Andreescu overcame an opening-set defeat to then win the next two sets en route to an impressive victory over higher-ranked Czech Petra Kvitova last night (Oct. 18) at the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open in Mexico.

Andreescu, 22, ranked No. 59 on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour, disposed of Kvitova (WTA No. 21 and No. 16 seed in the tournament) 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the tourney’s round of 16.

It took the Mississauga tennis star two hours, 11 minutes to get the job done and become the first player at the tournament to book her ticket to the next round, which gets underway Thursday.

“The first set kind of just went past me,” Andreescu told the WTA after her win. “(Kvitova) was hitting some very big shots, and her serve was very effective, and I felt like my emotions got the better of me as well towards the end of the first set. But I bounced back.”

According to the WTA, Andreescu was dominant in winning the final two sets against the 32-year-old Kvitova.

In first-round action on Monday, Andreescu bested WTA No. 36 Jil Teichman (Switzerland) 6-2, 6-4 to advance to Tuesday’s match.

Andreescu fell two rungs on the WTA ladder (No. 57 to No. 59 currently) after being ousted in the round of 16 last week at the San Diego Open.

She remains in search of a tournament victory as she seeks to return to the top of the women’s singles rankings.

In her bid to bust back into the top rankings, Andreescu has struggled to find consistency in her game this year–sometimes showing glimpses of the talent that allowed her to secure a stunning U.S. Open title in 2019 while at other times losing to lesser-ranked opponents.

Last week’s action in San Diego marked the Mississauga athlete’s first court action since her ousting in the third round of the U.S. Open in New York in early September.
