Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie is on a leave of absence from her mayoral duties, according to reports by several media outlets today (Sept. 13).

The mayor has not disclosed the exact reason for her leave, but reports suggest she is taking time away to focus on her campaign for Ontario Liberal Party leadership.

It remains unclear who will temporarily assume the responsibilities of the mayor during her absence.

Insauga.com has reached out to the mayor’s office for more information.

Crombie launched a campaign in June in a bid to become the leader of the Ontario Liberals, saying she wants to renew, rebuild and re-energize the party.

An online Angus Reid poll released earlier this month suggests Crombie is the preferred choice by a wide margin to be the next leader of the party.

The question “Who do you find most appealing as the next Ontario Liberal Leader?” was posed to those who’d consider voting Liberal in the next provincial election.

The reported move to step away from mayoral duties comes after critics said her focus has become divided. A number of people have taken to social media to voice their opinions on the mayor’s campaign trips.

Responding last month, Crombie said her focus is still on Mississauga and that she takes her job as mayor “very seriously.”

Crombie served as a Liberal MP from 2008 to 2011 before succeeding McCallion as mayor in 2014. She won a third term as Mississauga mayor last fall, earning 77 per cent of the vote.
