Mississauga takes first place for property underbidding

The world’s population hit the eight billion mark today (Nov. 15), and Mississauga residents are a small part of it.

In fact, a very small part.

With a population of 717,961, according to 2021 Census data, Mississauga has within its borders .008975 per cent of the global population, which hit the eight billion milestone today.

As far as Mississauga’s population count is concerned, the latest Census period marks the first time in the city’s relatively young history that its people count declined instead of grew.

The Census is conducted every five years. In 2016, Mississauga’s population checked in at 721,599, making it Canada’s sixth-largest city.

However, the latest Census figures now place Mississauga as the country’s seventh-largest urban centre, passed most recently by Winnipeg (749,607).

Meanwhile, the United Nations (UN) officially placed the world’s population at eight billion as of Nov. 15.

While the UN concedes that the eight billion mark may have already been reached–days, weeks or even months ago–or is yet to be achieved, its best guess is that the milestone was hit on Tuesday.

Looking forward, the UN’s World Population Prospects 2022 report indicates the global population is expected to hit 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and 10.4 billion by the 2080s.

Not everyone agrees with those projections. Some population experts believe the global people count will settle in the eight- to nine-billion range by 2100.

Last year in an interview with insauga.com, Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said the city could hit the one million population mark by as early as 2040 or closer to 2050.

If those population forecasts for both the world and Mississauga pan out, Mississauga will see its percentage of the global population increase slightly to .010309 per cent in 2050.
