Update: New details appear at bottom of story.

St. Marcellinus Secondary School in Mississauga is in lockdown and another school nearby is on alert after two people were stabbed on school property shortly after noon today (April 26).

Peel Regional Police tweeted that numerous officers are on the scene at the Mavis Rd./Courtneypark Dr. area high school as paramedics tended to the victims.

There’s no word yet on the first victim’s condition or if the person who was stabbed is a student or staff member at the school, or neither.

A second victim was identified a short time later and was being assessed by paramedics.

Also, there is no information yet on suspects.

Mississauga Secondary School, located in the same neighbourhood, has been placed in hold-and-secure mode, which is one level below lockdown in terms of threat presented.

“Lockdown” means the school doors are locked and teachers and students are told to remain in their classrooms.

A “hold-and-secure” status is more of a precaution and means that no unauthorized visitors are to be allowed into the school and it’s recommended that teachers and students remain in the classroom and not roam the hallways.

Update: Police say injuries to both victims, who have been identified as students at the school and under the age of 18, are not considered life-threatening. Both were taken to hospital.

As of 1:25 p.m., the lockdown and hold-and-secure at both schools has been lifted, police report.

Police say the suspect fled the scene after the stabbings, which took place in a field on school property and were preceded by an earlier “disturbance” at the school.

Const. Akhil Mooken said from the scene that police know the identity of the suspect they’re looking for and urge that person, also described as being under age 18, to turn themselves in.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no word yet from police on a specific motive for the stabbings.
