The next step in a $61-million plan to give South Common Community Centre in Erin Mills a major overhaul has been put in motion.

City of Mississauga officials are asking members of the west Mississauga community to complete a short online survey to let project officials know what they want to see in the revamped facility.

A link to the survey can be found on the City of Mississauga or Mississauga Library Twitter pages.

Built in 1981, the facility will see improvements to the library, expanded fitness spaces, an aquatics centre and a new gymnasium. The library expansion will see an extra 16,000 sq. ft. added that will include multi-purpose rooms.

Work is expected to begin in 2024.

The improvements are meant to meet the changing needs of the community as well as give the facility a much-needed facelift, City officials said earlier.

Last summer, the City received $45 million from the provincial government to put towards the upgrades at South Common Community Centre.

Mississauga is adding its own $16 million to the massive project.

“The South Common Community Centre and Library has been essential to the lives of many in our community, from our youth to our seniors here in Mississauga,” Sheref Sabawy, MPP for Mississauga-Erin Mills, said last year when the provincial money was announced. “It has been a cornerstone to our wonderful city.”

South Common Community Centre was built more than 40 years ago and has largely remained the same over the years serving as a hub of community activities for Erin Mills and west Mississauga, especially since it has a close connection to South Common Mall.

An expansion of both indoor and outdoor fitness spaces as well as the aquatics area has been long sought by the community

Meanwhile, major renovation work continues at Burnhamthorpe Community Centre, which is getting a new aquatics centre and new equipment-based fitness centre among other upgrades and additions that total about $40 million.

The facility, originally built in 1974, is closed to the public during renovations, and scheduled to reopen in spring or summer 2023.

The aquatics centre will include a six-lane, 25-metre pool, warm water therapy pool and multi-purpose space for swim parties and other functions.

The fitness centre will be equipped with cardio machines, weights and a fitness studio with wood-sprung floor.

The Burnhamthorpe facility is also receiving:

  • enhancements to existing multi-purpose spaces to improve social and recreation opportunities for residents
  • renovations to areas of the gymnasium as well as the Chic Murray indoor arena
  • facility design modernization and improved accessibility within the building
  • improved front entrance and access from parking lot
  • upgrades to the exterior appearance
  • new green space and improved connection to Jaycee Park
  • improved sustainable and accessible design standards
