Peel Regional Chair Nando Iannicca has been elected as board Chair of the Peel Police Services Board.

Just one day after Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives announced plans to appoint Peel’s regional chair, the council went ahead and chose to re-appoint Nando Iannicca.

If passed, the legislation from Premiere Doug Ford’s government, would “reduce municipal duplication” in two-tier municipal governments. Provincial facilitators appointed to Peel would assess how to extend strong mayor powers and cut red tape.

Part of the provincial plan was to re-appoint the existing chairs in Durham, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York. Nando Iannicca was Peel’s chair last term and Peel Regional Council didn’t wait for the province, they went ahead as planned, and selected him today (Nov. 17).

Mississauga Ward 5 Councillor Carolyn Parrish nominated Iannicca.

“I would like to nominate Nando Iannicca for Peel Regional Chair despite the province’s intent to appoint several regional chairs including Peel’s,” said Parrish. “I nominate him as he has emerged as the only candidate unchallenged well before the provincial announcement because the municipal act dictates the chair must be appointed at our inaugural meeting.”

Iannicca, previously a Ward 7 councillor in Mississauga, was first elected as regional chair in 2018.

The motion was seconded by Caledon’s new Mayor Annette Groves and passed unanimously.

With the province’s plan to bring in provincial facilitators to assess Peel’s two-tier system, Groves noted the possible changes on the horizon.

“I know that we will be facing a lot of challenges, a lot of growth pressures over the next term,” Groves said.

There are indications of a possible split or reduction of Peel’s role, as Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie has advocated for.

“We will work together through this new process that we’re about to undertake with the facilitators who will be appointed by the province in the new year,” Crombie said.

The new councillors were officially sworn in for the four-year term, which ends on Nov. 14, 2026.
