The OPP has identified a 22-year-old Brampton driver who earned a spot on the “naughty list” for speeding over 200 km/h on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW).
On Sunday (Dec. 24) police reported via social media, that they observed a vehicle travelling at nearly double the speed limit on the busy highway and were able to successfully stop the driver.
According to authorities, the man was charged with multiple offences including stunt driving, speeding and careless driving.
Additionally, he was handed a 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment, police say.
Several people expressed their views in the comments section on the issue, advocating for the implementation of stricter penalties.
“Anyone doing those speeds has no regard for anyone else, and will likely reoffend in 30 days. The penalties should be scaled based on the seriousness of the speed that they’re going,” one user wrote.
“Time to toughen up these fines. Seems to be three to four people a week now caught doing 200 km plus,” another user wrote.
In Ontario stunt driving is defined as vehicles travelling at:
- 50 km/h or more over the speed limit where the posted limit is above 80 km/h
- 40 km/h or more over where the limit is 80 km/h or less
- a speed of 150 km/h or more on any road or highway
Sometimes these stunt driving convictions carry additional consequences, such as a mandatory court appearance with fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000.
Upon conviction, drivers may also incur a one to three-year driver’s license suspension, six demerit points, mandatory driver improvement courses, and a potential jail term of up to six months
Illegal street racing and speeding on major highways, parking lots, and local streets have become an escalating issue in Mississauga, Brampton, and across southern Ontario in recent years, as repeatedly noted by the police.
Peel Police reiterate their unwavering stance against such behaviour, urging the public to report gatherings of multiple vehicles for racing or instances of racing in progress. If within Peel, individuals are encouraged to contact the Road Safety division at 905-453-2121, ext. 3750, or can reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
