A Brampton man was shot and killed in a case of mistaken identity, his family says.
The man was killed in the driveway of a home in a residential area near Goreway Drive and Mayfield Road in Brampton around 11:30 p.m. last Wednesday night. Another person was injured and sent to hospital in the shooting.
A video showed two men in the driveway clearing snow from a car. A white vehicle pulls up on the street, stops and a rear passenger door opens. Shots are fired, with the muzzle flashes clearly visible.
Two men then walk from the car toward the driveway, one of them firing numerous additional shots at one of the victims while the second victim appeared to flee in the direction of the home to safety.
Peel Regional Police described the shooting as targeted and later connected it to a second shooting in Caledon. No injuries were reported in the second incident.
Police have identified the man killed as Pritpal Singh, 26. Media outlets identified the man injured as his brother, Khushwantpal Singh.
In a GoFundMe, Khushwantpal Singh said his brother, Pritpal, wasn’t the intended target.
“On December 4, 2024, our world was shattered when our beloved brother, a bright and vibrant 26-year-old, was tragically taken from us in a senseless act of mistaken identity,” the fundraiser states. “The pain and grief that followed have been overwhelming, leaving us to piece together the fragments of our broken family.”
Pritpal arrived in Canada from India five months ago as a student.
“He had his whole life ahead of him, filled with dreams and aspirations, but all of it was taken away in an instant,” Khushwantpal said on GoFundMe.
“Pritpal was more than just a brother; he was a shining light in our lives. His infectious smile, kind heart and boundless energy inspired everyone around him.”
As of Tuesday morning, the fundraiser total was over $42,000.
The fundraiser aims to cover funeral costs, counselling and grief services.
