A man described as an “asylum claimant” was found dead inside a tent outside a former Region of Peel shelter in Mississauga’s east end early Wednesday morning.
Peel Regional Police said in an email statement to insauga.com that the “sudden death” of a man in his 40s in an encampment outside the one-time shelter in the area of Dundas Street East and Dixie Road has been deemed not suspicious by the coroner.
According to police, the man was without vital signs when first responders arrived on the scene. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police say a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown will hold a news conference outside the former shelter, at 1767 Dundas St. E., at 2:30 p.m. today to address the “tragic death.”
In a media advisory, the Brampton mayor’s office described the dead man as an “asylum claimant who was sleeping outside the Dundas shelter.”
The man’s body was reportedly found at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning outside the building, which is located on the north side of Dundas Street East just east of Main Street. The area is also a number of blocks east of Dixie Road.
The building previously served as a Region of Peel Family Shelter before the shelter was relocated to the northwest part of Mississauga, in Meadowvale.
