A man now charged in the hit-and-run death of a 22-year-old exchange student as she rode her bicycle on a busy north Mississauga road in the early morning hours of Aug. 23 was wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant at the time of the collision.
Peel Regional Police said in a news release Friday afternoon that investigators with their Major Collision Bureau, in partnership with the Provincial Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Unit (ROPE), arrested and charged a 26-year-old man on Thursday in connection with the Airport Road fatality.
The young Mississauga woman, whom police say had been in Canada studying for four months, was struck by a blue 2018 Mazda as she rode her bike northbound on Airport Road, near Morningstar Drive, at about 3:15 a.m.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The car fled the scene after the collision, police say, adding the vehicle was recovered unoccupied a short time later.
Traishaun Delpeache, 26, of no fixed address, is charged with dangerous operation causing death, failure to stop after accident causing death, flight from peace officer and drive motor vehicle with improper licence.
At the time of the incident, he was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for an alleged parole violation.
He appeared in Brampton court and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Sept. 15.
Police are seeking witnesses to the collision. Anyone with information is urged to call investigators at 905-453–2121, ext. 3710, or Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
