An upcoming road closure will last until nearly the end of the year in the Bolton area of Caledon.

King Street East will be closed from John Street to Humber Lea Road from May 22 until December 1, 2023.

Drivers will be asked to avoid the area and take an alternate route.

The closure will be in effect as crews work to replace the King Street Bridge east of Humber Lea Road, which requires structural repairs.

According to Peel Region, life-cycle cost analysis found that replacing the bridge would have a lower long-term cost than repairing it.

“Replacement of the bridge addresses its structural deterioration, but also provides an opportunity for wider sidewalks, safety improvements and compliance with updated standards,” said Peel Public Works.

Plans for the new bridge include two lanes (one in each direction), more space separating the traffic lanes from the sidewalk, wider sidewalks on both sides, updated pedestrian railings, lower maintenance costs, and a higher expected lifespan of 75 years.

Maintenance work will also be done on the other bridge on King Street East, just east of Old King Road, to extend the lifespan of the bridge. This work will only require closing one lane of the bridge for a few days.
