Mississauga drivers hope one of the city’s busiest roads stays off this year’s CAA list of the worst roads in Ontario.

The Mississauga section of Hurontario Street grabbed 10th spot in the 2023 installment of the CAA’s Worst Roads, which again relied upon public feedback to determine roads in the roughest state of disrepair — or with other safety issues — across the province.

Hurontario Street was the lone road in Peel to crack last year’s CAA top 10 list (see list below). For the second-straight year, Barton Street East in Hamilton topped the list in 2023.

On Wednesday morning, the CAA kicked off its 21st Worst Roads advocacy campaign through which it attempts to give decision-makers in municipalities across Ontario a snapshot of the roads the public perceives as not meeting their expectations.

Over the next several weeks, people can visit the CAA website to register their vote for roads, streets and boulevards that are filled with cracks and potholes or present other issues including traffic congestion and unsafe bicycle lanes.

Pothole damage to a vehicle can cost from $300 to $6,000, depending on the car model, CAA officials said.

Voting for this year’s list closes April 19.

“Poor roads affect us all. They make us late, cause delivery delays, contribute to congestion and, most importantly, can endanger those who use them,” CAA officials said in a news release today announcing the kickoff of the 2024 campaign.

CAA officials say they’re inviting Ontario drivers, cyclists, transit riders and pedestrians to vote in the CAA Worst Roads campaign and tell them which roads need improvement.

“Over the years, we have heard about potholes, congestion, poor road signs and other safety concerns,” officials said.

“Voting for Ontario’s Worst Roads helps shine the spotlight on where more work is needed. Your feedback helps us continue the dialogue with multiple levels of government to help pave the way for safer roads across Ontario.”

Since 2003, CAA’s annual Worst Roads campaign has influenced change, the agency said.

“Repaving and repair work has been done on many of the roads on Ontario’s Worst Roads list, with more to come.”
