A new route will take Ontario budget travellers to the sunny shores of Portugal.
Play, a low-cost airline that operates flights out of Hamilton International Airport, announced a new flight route connecting Hamilton, Ontario, with Faro, Portugal via Iceland.
Faro is the capital of southern Portugal’s Algarve region, known for its beaches and national parks.
Tickets for the new route are available now but the inaugural flight isn’t until April 12, 2025. There will be two weekly flights on Saturdays and Wednesdays until Oct. 29, 2025.
“Canadians can now experience the warmth and beauty of Portugal’s stunning southern coast, with its captivating beaches, rich history, and lively culture, with our affordable flights to Faro,” said Einar Örn Ólafsson, Play Airlines CEO. “We’re delighted to add Faro to our network, furthering our mission to make travel to Europe accessible and affordable.”
Roundtrip fares to Faro via Iceland start at $650.
Play operates from its hub at Keflavik Airport in Iceland, and passengers have the option to prolong their layover into a multi-day stopover for no additional cost for up to 10 days in Iceland before continuing their trip.
John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport officials are happy to see the expansion.
“This new service, combined with the opportunity to explore Iceland, provides southern Ontario travellers with more options and flexibility,” said Cole Horncastle, the airport’s executive managing director.
Founded in 2021, Play launched flights out of Hamilton in June 2023.
The airline operates 10 Airbus A320/321neo aircraft.
