Starting next week, there’s going to be some fall cleaning going on in Mississauga’s older neighbourhoods as city crews begin vacuuming up all the fallen leaves.

Each fall, the City of Mississauga provides a vacuum leaf pickup service on streets that are more than 35 years old and have many large, mature trees.

However, that doesn’t mean residents in those areas don’t have to do some of the work themselves. In fact, they still must do all the raking to prepare the leaves for pickup.

To see if and when the leaves will get vacuumed up in your neighbourhood, check out the city’s interactive map.

City crews vacuum up the leaves on a rotating basis across Mississauga starting Oct. 23 to 27. They complete the work using three different routes.

The first route, which begins next week, will also see leaf pickup again Nov. 13 to 17.

The second route is scheduled for leaf vacuum pickup Oct. 30 to Nov. 3 and again Nov. 20 to 24 while the third will see the leaves collected Nov. 6 to 10 and again Nov. 27 to Dec. 1.

City officials say if your address is listed for the leaf pickup service, you’ll get a notice in the mail letting you know when leaves will be picked up in your area.

Rain or early snowfall can impact the collection schedule. To find out if your street is affected, call 311.

If your area is listed for leaf vacuuming/pickup, you’ll be responsible for:

  • raking your leaves into a neat pile on the boulevard’s edge or into your ditch a day or two before the start of your collection week
  • not mixing other items such as wood, bricks or brush as they can damage equipment and injure workers
  • keeping the road and curbside storm drains clear of raked leaves
  • not placing garbage bags or bins on top of loose leaf piles
  • removing parked cars and sports equipment from the road

City officials note that if you miss leaf pickup or more leaves fall after your pickup dates have passed, the Region of Peel will collect leaves and yard waste placed in bins or paper bags at curbside until mid-December.
