Receiving financial relief, preparing for floods, and how to minimize flood damage is the topic of an upcoming public forum in Mississauga.

City of Mississauga staff will take residents through the current challenges facing residents due to increased severe flooding and outline what is being done to help reduce the impact to residents, homes, parklands and businesses.

Following a staff presentation, attendees will be able to ask questions and learn about the steps they can take to avoid being impacted by future floods through community partner booths set up in the atrium of the Living Arts Centre.

The session takes place Nov. 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Living Arts Centre.

The session follows this past summer’s severe flooding which has led to the city rolling out new programs to assist residents in coping with flood impacts and to undertake additional preventative measures to help reduce home flood risk.

One of the programs is the Residential Compassionate Flood Relief Grant beginning in December that will provide a one-time payment of $1,000 to affected property owners and tenants who experienced basement flooding during the severe weather events.

Additionally, beginning in February, a Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate Program will provide rebates up to $6,800 for eligible flood prevention improvements and a Flood Resilience Rebate Program will provide rebates of 50 per cent of the invoiced cost up to a maximum of $3,000 to cover costs associated with eligible measures taken to make improvements to your home to minimize flooding impact.

Mayor Carolyn Parrish will be at the meeting as will be members of local agencies including but not limited to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Credit Valley Conservation, Toronto Regional Conservation Authority, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services
