Time is running out to visit one of the city’s well-loved favourites as the Apple Factory will be closing its doors for good after 44 years in Brampton.

The local institution is closing up shop later this month now that the roadside store and market has been sold by the Picard family with a development application filed to the city for a new housing development on the site at 10024 Mississauga Rd.

Opening in 1979, the Apple Factory Country Grocer has been an institution for residents in Brampton and Halton Hills and has brought visitors from across the GTA to the destination.

From its roots selling apples, cider and of course their apple pie, the Apple Factory has since expanded to include a larger selection of meat, produce and baked goods, along with British treats, Picard-brand products and Newfoundland cuisine.

The Apple Factory will open for the last time on Dec. 24. The store says it is not taking orders for turkey or ham this year and pies are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Due to our closing, supplies may be limited,” The Apple Factory website reads.

Owner Jim Picard took over the Apple Factory from founders Roy and Lenore Laidlaw in 2007. General Manager Jim Hurt thanked the community for years of memories in a statement that customer’s “joy and satisfaction have always been our greatest reward.”

“As we approach this season of farewells, we hold dear every moment spent with our customers and team,” Hurt said.

Glen Rouge Developments is proposing three high-rise residential towers and six blocks of stacked townhouses on the property.

The proposed development is a part of a larger planned community known as Mount Pleasant Heights, which will include low, medium, and high-density residential developments, an elementary school, community services, parks and a new road network.
