Some 20,000 people are reportedly taking part in what’s being called the largest outdoor Eid prayer gathering in Canada this morning (June 28) in Mississauga.
Hosted by Mississauga-based relief and development organization Penny Appeal Canada, the prayer service is being held at Churchill Meadows Community Centre on Ninth Line in west Mississauga from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
The Eid prayer is being led by Kuwaiti imam Sheikh Mishary Alafasy.
“This year, celebrate Eid in a memorable way by prayer with Sheikh Mishary Alafasy. We look forward to welcoming you and your family this Eid al-Adha,” prayer organizers with Penny Appeal Canada say.
Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is the second and largest of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam. It honours the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice one of his sons, either Ishmael or Isaac, as an act of obedience to God’s command.
The holiday is being observed this year on June 29, but celebrations take place from June 28 to July 1.
