LANE CLOSURES: Traffic on QEW will be delayed nightly in Mississauga

Four lanes of the QEW in Mississauga will be closed nightly and overnights through the end of the month as work continues on the highway bridge over the Credit River.

Officials with the QEW/Credit River Improvement Project overseeing the major bridge rehabilitation work said in an email update two eastbound and two westbound lanes will be shut down to traffic at various times in the late evening and overnight hours until Nov. 30.

More lane and ramp closures are expected in December as well, but project leaders have yet to provide details beyond the end of November.

Two eastbound and two westbound lanes of the QEW between Erin Mills Parkway and Hurontario Street are slated for nightly closures, seven nights a week, from as early as 10 p.m. until as late as 8 a.m. the following mornings, officials said.

At some times, only one lane in each direction will be closed to traffic. However, all four lanes will be shut down for most of the late evening and overnight hours during the scheduled closures.

Nighttime/overnight closures and other restrictions have been commonplace since 2022 both on the QEW and on nearby roads due to the massive bridge project that began nearly three years ago.

No specific completion date for the work has been provided.

More traffic disruptions are anticipated as work continues in the coming weeks and months. Night and weekend work along the 2.6-km stretch of the QEW from Hurontario Street to Mississauga Road, and beyond, is expected to impact traffic for the duration of the project.

In a project update late last month, officials noted several major components of the massive bridge rehabilitation job have been completed as work continues through the fall and into winter.

Most recently, the QEW eastbound alignment was restaged and traffic is now running on the new Mississauga Road overpass, officials said.

Additionally, back in July, paving and line painting on the QEW eastbound was done and in June, demolition and removal of the south section of the existing Credit River bridge was completed.

Moving forward on the $313.8-million project, which is being completed by EllisDon Corp. and Coco Paving Inc., ongoing activities in the coming months include:

  • work on the Mississauga Road multi-use path
  • construction and rehabilitation of the existing bridge
  • work on the Mississauga Road interchange
  • work on the pedestrian-cyclist crossings over the QEW
  • QEW median improvement work

EllisDon Corp. and Coco Paving Inc. were awarded the contract in late 2020 and work began in 2021/22.

The project, first studied by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation in 2013, initially called for demolition of the existing 840-ft.-long bridge, which was built in 1934 and expanded in 1960.   

However, public outcry and strong opposition from Mississauga city council in late 2019 changed the provincial government’s mind and it was decided the existing span, located just east of Mississauga Road, would instead be rehabilitated.  

The province said earlier that based on the feedback it received in the aftermath of the initial demolition announcement, it made the decision to preserve the original heritage structure of the bridge, which is owned by the Ontario government.
