Lane reductions at busy intersection by Square One in Mississauga.

Lane closures are now in place and will continue until Sept. 19 at one of Mississauga’s busiest intersections as crews complete track work for the $4.6-billion Hazel McCallion light-rail transit line next to Square One Shopping Centre.

Officials at Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of the massive Mississauga-to-Brampton transit initiative, said in their latest project update motorists, businesses and area residents can expect temporary lane closures, restricted turning areas, added noise and other disruptions starting July 11 and continuing until the third week of September.

The work, taking place at Burnhamthorpe Road and Hurontario Street (see map below), starts Thursday night and will continue seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. over the next two months as crews install the track foundation, or guideway, for the Hazel McCallion Line. Specifically, they’ll be welding tracks and doing concrete work.

Project leaders said the first phase of work will focus on the north half of the busy intersection and continue until Aug. 15. The second phase will then address the south half and is expected to conclude by Sept. 19.

“During both phases, eastbound and westbound (traffic) movements will be reduced to a single lane in each direction on Burnhamthorpe Road,” officials said in their online update.

“Left turns at the intersection will also be prohibited. Detour routes will be available for drivers via Hurontario Street and Central Parkway.”

MiWay transit bus routes will also be impacted during the two-month period, officials noted. Check the MiWay website for more information.

In addition, area residents and businesses can also expect to hear more noise and vibration caused by trucks, excavators, loaders, backhoes and other construction equipment.

Similar work on other sections of Hurontario Street has been carried out over the past year or so and will continue for the rest of 2024 as crews work to get the 22-kilometre LRT line completed by early 2025.

When completed, the Hazel McCallion Line will whisk riders from Port Credit GO in south Mississauga all the way north into Brampton via Hurontario Street, with more than 19 stops along the way.

Metrolinx received the go-ahead from the province in early February to extend the line by three or four kilometres into downtown Brampton and reintroduce the “downtown loop” to the City Centre area of Mississauga. The latter component will add several stops to the route.
