Brampton North MP Ruby Sahota is joining Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.
Sahota has been named Minister of Democratic Institutions and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
The new post comes as part of the cabinet shuffled in the quake of former deputy prime minister and finance minister Chrystia Freeland’s sudden resignation which has caused division in the Liberal government caucus with many within calling for Trudeau’s resignation.
Still, the Prime Minister is carrying on even though NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh intends to no longer prop up Trudeau and intends to bring forward a non-confidence motion that could bring the government down and prompt an election as early as the spring.
Meanwhile, Sahota is expected to start in her new role immediately.
First elected in 2015, Sahota has been returned to Ottawa in two subsequent federal elections and before joining cabinet she served as chief government whip and sat on many government committees.
A long-time Brampton resident, she attended Central Peel Secondary School.
