June 23 Weather: Brisk winds and thunderstorms headed to southern Ontario

Yesterday, Environment Canada issued a thunderstorm warning for much of southern Ontario. The warning predicted heavy rain with accumulations of up to 50 mm; strong winds, and the potential for hail. It seems like similar weather patterns will continue through today.

For those who enjoy a beautiful morning sky, today’s sunrise will be at 5:37 a.m., five minutes later than last week, as the days begin to shorten following the summer solstice.

Residents in Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, and Hamilton will wake up to a mix of sun and clouds, with a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms. In Durham it will be mainly cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of thunderstorms.

It will be fairly breezy across the region, with wind speeds reaching 60 km/h in Mississauga, Brampton, and Durham, while Halton and Hamilton will experience brisk winds at 50 km/h.

Temperatures are expected to reach 26 C in Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, and Hamilton, while Durham region will be slightly cooler at 25 C.

The UV index will hit very high at level 8. Environment Canada advises protecting your skin when the UV index is three or higher, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Additionally, Health Canada says that if outdoors, individuals should seek shade, wear protective clothing and hats, apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, avoid tanning, use UV-protective sunglasses, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Sunset will begin at 9:01 p.m.

By evening, skies will become mostly cloudy across all regions, bringing a 40 per cent chance of rain and the potential for thunderstorms.

Temperatures will drop by about 11 degrees, reaching 16 C in Mississauga, Brampton, and Halton, while Hamilton and Durham will see temperatures fall to 15 C.
