Residents in Mississauga, Brampton, Halton and Hamilton, prepare to bundle up, as frigid temperatures and the possibility of snowfall make a comeback this week.

Last week, southern Ontario experienced a combination of snow and torrential rain, which led to messy and slushy commutes. Despite the precipitation tapering off, the cold temperatures lingered.

On Friday evening, snowfall resumed with strong wind gusts, causing reduced visibility from blowing snow with an accumulation of 10 centimetres or more. Additionally, the poor weather caused flight delays, cancellations, and diversions at Pearson Airport in Mississauga.

This week the chilly vibes are here to stay with some snowy days and a bit of sunshine.

As of today (Jan. 14) the weather brings a partly cloudy day with temperatures reaching -14 C, though it will feel significantly colder, around -23 C. Scattered flurries are also expected and will stop closer to the evening, while wind speeds moving southwest may pick up to 60 km/h.

On Monday, there will be some sunshine, but don’t be deceived by its radiance. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach -10 C, and will further decrease as the evening approaches with the wind chill dipping to -23 C. It will be a fairly windy day with wind speeds moving up to 40 km/h.

According to The Weather Network, those planning to commute on Monday should prepare for potential travel disruptions as weather conditions may swiftly transition from clear skies to near-whiteout situations due to snow squalls.

“Frigid air blowing over lakes that are running a few degrees above seasonal is the perfect environment for vivacious lake-effect squalls to rise over the traditional snow belt communities,” The Weather Network noted in their latest report.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy throughout the day with -8 C temperatures and a 40 per cent chance of snow. Temperatures are anticipated to fall to -15 C by the evening.

As per Environment Canada, Wednesday will be a mix of sun and clouds with a 30 per cent possibility of flurries. Temperatures will sit at minus -8 C before shifting to -10 C.

Thursday and Friday will be predominately cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of snow. The daytime high is predicted to reach -7 C. Closer to the evening, temperatures will go below -14 C.

Meteorologists are forecasting a combination of sun and clouds on Saturday, with temperatures floating somewhere between -5 C and -7 C. Heading into the night, cloud coverage will increase, as temperatures drop to a very cool -13 C.
