Indigenous department store opens pop-up location in Square One in Mississauga

Canada’s first Indigenous department store has opened a pop-up location in Square One in Mississauga.

aaniin Retail Inc., Canada’s first 100 per cent Indigenous-owned department store, opened a holiday pop-up location in Square One Shopping Centre on Nov. 20. The store will be open until Dec. 31.

aaniin started out as a streetwear brand in June 2021, and has grown quickly. Until recently they had a location in the Stackt Market in Toronto but are now looking to expand into malls.

The aaniin house brand of apparel serves as a catalyst to initiate conversations about Indigenous languages while creating visibility 365 days a year, the retailer states.

Their mission is to empower Indigenous artists, businesses, and brands, making syllabics, writing system used by several Indigenous language communities in Canada and the United States, a daily presence in colonized spaces.

Aaniin means “hello” or “welcome” in Ojibway.

The company aims to reclaim the Indigenous economy while involving communities and creating opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs. 

The pop-up aaniin shop in Square One is located beside Wilfred and Lacoste on Level 2.
