The Prime Minister of India has condemned the violence that erupted at a Hindu temple in Brampton on Sunday calling it a “cowardly attempt” to intimidate.
In a statement released on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called on the Canadian government to protect those coming under attack and uphold the rule of law.
“I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada,” Modi said. “Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law.”
The incident took place on the grounds of Hindu Sabha Mandir on The Gore Road with videos posted online showing fights breaking out between two opposing religious groups. Both sides can be seen using sticks during the skirmishes.
It is believed the protestors arrived at the temple because of the presence of Indian diplomats.
The videos indicate that banners and flags of those who arrived at the temple support the Sikh separatist movement that calls for the creation of the independent state of Khalistan, an area that is part of India.
Following the Brampton incident, protests and demonstrations also took place in the Malton area of Mississauga.
Peel Regional Police say three arrests were made in connection to the fights. Later there was also a large police presence at the temple.
Police later issued a statement saying that they respect the individual right to protest as outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but that their duty and responsibility is to maintain public order and ensure the safety of everyone.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the violence.
“The acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable. Every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely,” Trudeau said.
The long-simmering dispute between Sikhs and Hindus over the Khalistan issue has erupted recently in Canada with similar fights taking place in British Columbia. The Canadian government has also become officially involved with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linking the Indian government to targeted violence against Sikh activists in Canada. These allegations have been denied by the Modi government.
