India’s consulate in Toronto said it is “shocked” over the murder of a Brampton man who moved to Canada just five months ago and is extending all possible help to the bereaved family.
Police say Pritpal Singh was gunned down in the driveway of a home in a residential area near Goreway Drive and Mayfield Road 11:30 p.m. last Wednesday. Another person was injured and sent to hospital in the shooting.
Family members have since said that Singh was shot in a case of mistaken identity.
“We are shocked by the cold-blooded gunning down of a young Indian national, Mr Pritpal Singh in Brampton. Our deepest condolences to the family & friends of the deceased. All possible help is being extended to the bereaved family at this tragic loss. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace,” India’s Consulate General in Toronto posted on X.
Two men then walk from the car toward the driveway, one of them firing numerous additional shots at one of the victims while the second victim appeared to flee in the direction of the home to safety.
Peel Regional Police described the shooting as targeted and later connected it to a second shooting in Caledon. No injuries were reported in the second incident.
The victim’s brother who was injured has been identified as Khushwantpal Singh who has said on a GoFundMe page that Pritpal wasn’t the intended target.
“He had his whole life ahead of him, filled with dreams and aspirations, but all of it was taken away in an instant,” Khushwantpal said on GoFundMe. “Pritpal was more than just a brother; he was a shining light in our lives. His infectious smile, kind heart and boundless energy inspired everyone around him.”
