Impaired-related charges have been laid following a serious crash in Markham earlier this week that left a man dead.

York Regional Police said that on Monday at around 7:45 p.m., officers responded to a crash in the area of Highway 7 East and Reesor Road.

An SUV crossed the centre line and hit a hatchback that was heading in the opposite direction, police said.

The driver of the hatchback — a 68-year-old man from Markham — died at the scene and a woman in the same vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The driver of the SUV was arrested and taken to hospital, also with injuries that were reported to be serious.

Kitchener resident Carolyn Nielsen, 42, has been charged with dangerous operation causing death, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, impaired operation causing death, and impaired operation causing bodily harm.

Any witnesses who haven’t yet spoken with police or anyone with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash was asked to come forward.
