An impaired driver called police on himself in Ontario last weekend, officers say, leading to an arrest.
Ontario Provincial Police said that on Saturday at around 4:30 a.m., Manitoulin OPP officers got a report of a possible impaired driver in the area of Wood Street in Espanola.
“Shortly after, the driver called police to report their location,” OPP said.
“Police attended the location provided, and further testing on scene resulted in the driver being arrested for impaired operation.”
A police spokesperson told INsauga.com that it’s not clear who the first call came from as it was made anonymously, but it’s known the second call came from the driver.
The spokesperson wouldn’t say if the driver said on the phone that they were impaired.
“Whether there were driver utterances or not, and what they were, is part of evidence and is not being released at this time,” the spokesperson said.
Espanola resident Merek Manninen, 24, has been charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and operation while impaired — blood alcohol concentration of 80-plus.
His licence was suspended and vehicle impounded for seven days, police said.
A court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 6.
