Residents who want to give Mississauga’s newest outdoor winter attraction a trial run — or skate — can do so starting today at Port Credit Memorial Park.

That’s where a much-anticipated 220-metre-long ice skating trail/loop will begin welcoming people with a “soft opening” at 4:30 p.m.

People are encouraged to lace up their skates, take a few — or many — laps around the frozen path and enjoy some hot chocolate at the Friday afternoon event.

They’ll also have the chance to listen to Mississauga’s new “anthem,” a song celebrating the 50th anniversary of Canada’s seventh-largest city and officially unveiled earlier this week after a months-long contest.

Ward 1 Coun. Stephen Dasko said Friday morning on social media that the “soft opening” of the Port Credit Memorial Park Skating Trail, a project “near and dear to my heart,” will be followed by an official grand opening on Feb. 17.

“Enjoy an inaugural skate and hot chocolate. Test the new skating trail prior to the official grand opening and hear Mikey Bloom’s new Mississauga Anthem,” Dasko said in a post to X (formerly Twitter).

The project at one of the city’s oldest and most popular parks has been in the works since 2022, and the path was initially expected to open last month.

The trail is 3.5 metres wide and will serve as a walking path during spring, summer and fall, Dasko told the community when plans were unveiled in late 2022.

Located to the immediate east of the Credit River, the ice trail features a glycol cooling system that, among other benefits, keeps the pipes from freezing in extremely cold weather.

At the August 2022 unveiling, several residents said the new ice skating path is a welcome addition to the community, representing the realization of a “longtime community dream.”

Port Credit Memorial Park is located along the Credit River just as it empties into Lake Ontario. It’s a popular location for many festivals and events and also features picnic areas, a skateboarding park, accessible playground and basketball nets.
