Hwy 401 lanes closed for several hours after a dump truck struck an overpass in Mississauga Wednesday (Oct. 19) morning.
The eastbound Hwy. 401 express lanes closed past Mississauga Road just after 7 a.m. according to a tweet from 511 Ontario.
A dump truck lost its load and got stuck upright under the overpass.
The dump box came off the truck as the driver was travelling eastbound on Hwy. 401 approaching Mavis Road, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a tweet. The box lifted when it hit the pedestrian overpass — the truck continued on, leaving the box behind.
The driver appears to have mistakenly left the box up.
“The box should be down when you are driving,” Schmidt said. “He had just dumped it in the construction zone.”
Schmidt said the truck driver was not injured.
OPP say lanes will be closed for at least three hours. Engineers are inspecting the bridge and more equipment was being brought in to remove the truck.
Update: @ONtransport engineers are currently assessing for damage inside the overpass prior to reopening. There has been damage sustained to the structure. pic.twitter.com/CgoaRh3nnU

Second Update: The highway was reportedly reopened around 3 p.m.
